Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

What is a Flex Sig?

This procedure enables the physician to look at the inside of the large intestine from the rectum through the last part of the colon, called the Sigmoid Colon. This procedure may be used to find  the cause of diarrhea, abdominal pain or constipation. They also use sigmoidoscopy to look for early signs of cancer in the colon and the rectum. With sigmoidoscopy, the physicians can see bleeding, inflammation, and polyps.

Do I have to go to the Hospital for this test?

No. This procedure is performed at Athens Medical Group, in our procedure room.

Will it hurt?

The most discomfort felt will be some bloating and bowel distension due to the air inflated into  the bowel temporarily.

Will I be put to sleep?

Anesthesia is not necessary for this test.

Can I eat before the test?

If  necessary a light breakfast is allowed. Enema's are used 1 hour prior to the appointment to evacuate the bottom portion of the colon.

How long will the test take?

The test itself should take no more than 15 minutes.

Will I be able to return to work after the test?

Yes, normal activity may be resumed.

What is the doctor looking for?

Any abnormalities of the colon which may include polyps or pockets called diverticulosis, or other abnormalities of the colon mucosa.

When can I get the results?

The results are seen at the time of the test and relayed to the patient at that time.

What if something is found during the exam?

The doctor may perform a biopsy at the time of the scope and send it off to the lab for evaluation.

Caring For Your Back
Back exercises are an essential part of back care. Conditioning the muscles that support your back can relieve and, in many cases, prevent a problem back. Back care also means using good posture throughout the day and lifting safely. Taking care of your back is one of the best investments you'll ever make and the returns are worth it -- a strong healthy pain-free back.
