What is a Flex Sig?
This procedure enables the physician to
look at the inside of the large intestine from the rectum through
the last part of the colon, called the Sigmoid Colon. This procedure
may be used to find the cause of diarrhea, abdominal pain
or constipation. They also use sigmoidoscopy to look for early
signs of cancer in the colon and the rectum. With sigmoidoscopy,
the physicians can see bleeding, inflammation, and polyps.
Do I have to go to the Hospital for this test?
No. This procedure is performed at Athens Medical
Group, in our procedure room.
Will it hurt?
The most discomfort felt will be some bloating
and bowel distension due to the air inflated into the bowel
temporarily.
Will I be put to sleep?
Anesthesia is not necessary for this test.
Can I eat before the test?
If necessary a light breakfast is allowed.
Enema's are used 1 hour prior to the appointment to evacuate the
bottom portion of the colon.
How long will the test take?
The test itself should take no more than 15 minutes.
Will I be able to return to work after the test?
Yes, normal activity may be resumed.
What is the doctor looking for?
Any abnormalities of the colon which may include
polyps or pockets called diverticulosis, or other abnormalities
of the colon mucosa.
When can I get the results?
The results are seen at the time of the test
and relayed to the patient at that time.
What if something is found during the exam?
The doctor may perform a biopsy at the time of
the scope and send it off to the lab for evaluation.
