What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?
A cardiac rehabilitation program is designed
for patients who are recovering after a cardiac event. Heart attacks,
bypass surgery, angioplasty, stint replacement, valve replacement,
and even heart transplant are some of the reasons to enroll in
a cardiac rehabilitation program. You will be supervised during
the exercise component by highly skilled staff. There is also
an educational component to help you learn how to modify
your risk factors.
Will my insurance pay for Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Medicare and most commercial insurance companies
will reimburse for cardiac rehabilitation. The staff will evaluate
your situation before you start the program.
What kind of exercise will I be doing in Cardiac Rehabilitation?
The exercise will consist of walking, stretching
and strengthening using treadmills, bikes, steps, recumbent
stepper, and arm ergo. You will start slowly, following a safe
exercise prescription that is evaluated by your physicians, nurses,
and exercise physiologists. The staff will encourage you to give
input into your exercise plan and they will help you to
develop your own "at-home" exercise program.
How will I know if I am responding to exercise safely?
The staff will be observing you for any change
in symptoms as well as monitoring you heart rhythm. You have frequent
blood pressure checks and learn how to measure your own heart
rate.
What else can I learn through Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Many people find that rehab programs are very
helpful after getting out of the hospital. They allow you to join
a group to exercise and talk to others who have been through a
similar event. You may go to special classes or get personal help
to quit smoking. You will be guided by a dietitian to begin
a heart-healthy eating plan. You will be assisted in weight loss
if needed. You can learn to relax and reduce stress in your
life. You will improve your fitness level. After completing
the program you will feel better and be able to make these lifestyle
changes a part of your everyday life!
