| Bone Density Screening
What is Bone Density Screening?
A Bone Density Screening is a non-invasive
medical procedure similar to an x-ray that will measure deterioration
of bone tissue and possible susceptibility to fracture. The results
will determine if a patient has osteoporosis or is at a risk for
developing osteoporosis.
Is there any pain involved in this procedure?
There is no pain at all. You will
lay on your back with a pillow under your head and a cushion under
your legs.
Will I have to undress?
Only if you have metal around
your back or hips (i.e. clothing snaps, zippers, etc.)
How long will the test take?
Approximately 25 minutes.
Why would the doctor want me to have this
done?
Your doctor may think you are
at risk for developing Osteoporosis.
What will this test show?
This test will let the doctor know
how strong your bone density is and if you are at risk for
fractures.
Is the exam safe?
Bone densitometry involves an
extremely small dose of radiation, and is very safe.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare
for the test?
There is no preparation for this
exam.
If my test were to show that I have Osteoporosis
is there anything that can be done to help me?
Yes, there are now prescription drugs
that can help build back some of the bone density that has
been lost.
Is there anything I can do to help prevent
Osteoporosis?
Exercise, take the proper amount
of calcium for your age, do not smoke, and hormone therapy.
